Privacy & Vox Pop Consent Statement

The Illawarra Presents is a regional arts and culture publication published by N of One Solutions Pty Ltd.

We regularly invite members of the community to take part in short Vox Pop interviews. These conversations help us capture local voices, experiences and perspectives and may be shared in our print magazine and digital channels.

This statement explains what you are agreeing to when you participate and how we will use the information and content we collect.

What we collect

If you participate in a Vox Pop, we may collect:

  • your first name

  • your suburb

  • your image and/or video

  • your voice

  • your responses and comments

  • an optional mobile phone number, if you choose to provide one

  • a record of your consent.

We only invite people aged 18 years or over to participate in these Vox Pops. You will be asked to confirm that you are 18 or older when providing consent. You do not need to provide a mobile number to participate.

How your Vox Pop may be used

By providing consent, you agree that The Illawarra Presents may photograph, film and/or audio record your participation and may use your image, voice and comments in:

  • The Illawarra Presents print magazine

  • The Illawarra Presents website or digital publications

  • The Illawarra Presents social media channels

  • editorial and promotional content used to promote The Illawarra Presents and its stories.

Your participation is voluntary and unpaid.

Your Vox Pop will not be provided to an advertiser or other third party for use in their own advertising or promotional campaigns without further permission from you.

How we identify you

Unless otherwise agreed with you, we will identify Vox Pop participants using only their first name and suburb.

For example:

“John, Bulli”

Your mobile number will not be published.

Editing your comments

Vox Pop responses may be shortened or edited for length, clarity, spelling, grammar or presentation.

We will not knowingly edit your comments in a way that materially changes their meaning or misrepresents what you told us.

Not every interview or response collected will necessarily be published.

Social media and online publication

If your Vox Pop is published online or on social media, it may be seen, shared, saved, reposted or commented on by other people.

While The Illawarra Presents controls the material published through its own accounts and platforms, we cannot completely control what happens to material after it has been publicly shared by others.

Social media and other online services may also store or process information outside Australia in accordance with their own privacy policies.

Your mobile number

Providing a mobile number is optional.

If you provide one, we may use it to contact you by phone or SMS if we need to:

  • clarify something you said during your interview

  • confirm information associated with your Vox Pop

  • contact you about publication of your contribution

  • respond to a question or request from you about your participation.

We will not publish your mobile number or add it to a marketing contact list simply because you participated in a Vox Pop.

Changing your mind

You can contact us if you change your mind about participating or would like us to stop using your Vox Pop.

Where reasonably possible, we will honour a withdrawal request received before publication.

However, once a magazine has been printed or distributed, we cannot retrieve copies already in circulation. Similarly, once material has been published online or on social media, we may be able to remove it from channels we control but cannot guarantee removal of copies, screenshots, shares or reposts made by other people.

Withdrawal of consent does not retrospectively make publication that occurred while your consent was in place unauthorised.

How we look after your information

We take reasonable steps to protect the personal information and recordings we collect from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access or disclosure.

Vox Pop recordings, photographs, contact information and consent records may be retained for editorial, publishing and record-keeping purposes.

We aim to collect only the information we reasonably need for these purposes.

Sensitive or personal information

A Vox Pop is intended to be a short, voluntary public conversation. You are not required to answer any question you would prefer not to answer.

Please keep in mind that anything you choose to say during an interview may potentially form part of the published response, subject to the consent you have provided.

If a response includes particularly sensitive or personal information that raises additional privacy or editorial considerations, we may contact you before publication or decide not to publish that material.

Questions, access or concerns

If you have a question about your Vox Pop, want to correct information you provided, want to request access to information we hold about your participation, or want to ask us not to use your contribution, please contact:
